It is nice to know that detail is there, especially if I was thinking of taking this negative to the dark room and might want to pull it out in some of those areas: I take most of my photos outside in standard British weather, and I need a film that can be under or over exposed occasionally and still give results that I can get acceptable images from. I think people looking for that aesthetic and willing to be less cavalier with their metering would be happy with the lower cost of Kentmere. leider habe ich beim K400 aber in der standentwicklung nie die Wlkchen in den Griff gekriegt- die Entwicklung wurde immer fleckig und ungleichmig, weil ja die Bewegung fehlte. Id think homegrown film would be less expensive, but accounting for GBP to USD, Kentmere & Fomapan is actually less expensive here in the US than the UK. These days, I primarily shoot 100 Classic, in large part because I use Fomapan a great deal in the testing of vintage cameras Ive repaired or restored, and their limited shutter speeds and apertures make it difficult to properly expose on a bright, sunny day with fast ISO 400 film. Its siblings include Fomapan 100 and Fomapan 200, plus a Retropan 320 film that was introduced just a few years ago. Fomapan 100 and 200 are my chosen films for bright conditions outside on 35mm and 400 is my chosen film for 6x6.It's just not great for 35mm nor is it very adaptable to different light conditions.in my experience. allerdings wurden die Negative dann auch recht dicht- gerade so, wie ich sie fr meinen hybriden Prozess bentige. While we're discussing the Foma/Arista 400, yes it does seem grainy. I personally enjoy pushing Kentmere and think its forgiving tonal range leads to better images when pushed. I think again the Kentmere has more detail here, less lost in the shadows and better definition in the highlights. But dont limit yourself to those; it also sings in Kodak D-23. Right out of the gate, I cant trust it. Is that the new Jane Bond? I no longer have to cross my fingers hoping that the negatives will come out. Because Fomapan is a classic, old-school type of emulsion, its performance in 135 format is what youd more or less expect when shot in the much smaller frame size of 35mm film, which in a word, a bit grainy. Although these werent excessively I am presently shooting Fomapan 200 in my 45. A thorough article and greatly appreciated. Update: May 26, 2021Added a notation that the Fomapan data sheets indicate that the anti-halation dye clears during development, but that it has not been my experience that it does. Unless I pre-soak and rinse the film before the developer, I do so thoroughly after dumping-off the developer to ensure that none of the vivid green anti-halation dye remains to avoid polluting my stop both with it; with that level of rinse, the stop is probably redundant, but I do it anyway. Fomapan 400 is the fastest emulsion in Foma Bohemias line of films. Ive always liked the look Ive been getting, and can definitely see a uniqueness from HP5 and Tri-X. Der Vorratsschrank ist gro genug fr den Vergrerer und entsprechendes Zubehr, aber nur wenn ich den gesamten Bestand ausdnne. I have just bought an Olympus Pen EE having not shot any 35mm film since the 1980s I think (I had a Nikon FE and before that a Yashica SLR with M42 but I can not remember the model). Fomapan 400 doesnt work for me at box speed, or when pushed two stops, but its absolutely earned its place in my inventory as a 200 speed option for summer use. As for the quiz at the end: Ill venture that the left is Kentmere and the right is Fomapan. And while you cannot buy D-23, you can buy it in kits from Photographers formulary or mix it up yourself. Thanks to the compensating nature of TMax and Acufine and using a highly dilute (1+63) mix of Ilfotec HC. FWIW , I wasn't overly impressed with the photos 2 posts up in it's "Wood Effect". This article started as a write up about my time shooting these two emulsions over a long bank holiday weekend, where I had similar lighting conditions and was able to shoot similar exposures across both Fomapan and Kentmere rolls. if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined'){ez_ad_units.push([[580,400],'35mmc_com-medrectangle-3','ezslot_10',180,'0','0'])};__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-35mmc_com-medrectangle-3-0'); I think this experience definitely demonstrated to me the way that box speed is subjective. If excessive grain is not disturbing you for the Fomapan 400 you can go for Rodinal. Film Comparison: Kentmere 400 Vs Fomapan 400. Black and rich and whites are vivid. The woman was climbing out for some fresh air, that shot was taken during the heatwave in August! It has more highlight bleed and halation than Kentmere, but this is rarely overwhelming in the way it may be on something like Cinestill 800t. I think that overexposed by a stop it definitely shares characteristics, there is some equivalency between the rendering of the grain, and the achievable contrast in flat light. Ive found that when scanning, especially if youre using something like an Epson V600, it can be very difficult to recover highlights from Tri-X without throwing off the whole image. Lastly, I converted the file to 16-bit Grayscale and added a curves layer to set the white/black points in Photoshop. The grain is fairly fine. Filling the Gap Photography & Mental Health. Kodak Trix 400 in Rodinal. Processed in Legacy Pro L-110 (HC110 knock off) 1:40 from concentrate, 12 min at 19 deg. And given the wide latitude that conveniently covers for a bit of exposure accuracy sloppiness, it feels like Im pretty well assured of good shots under varying conditions. These images show how much information is available in these highlights when metered and exposed dead-on, as well as what detail is retained within the shadows and what is lost. Thanks for the through writeup Simon. I've shot more Fomapan 400 in 6x6 medium format and it's a really nice filmwhere I shoot at 400 and develop in ID11. In their world, it was imperative to get the shot (a few were still using 45 press cameras) so each step of the process carried equal weight: exposure, developing, printing. I dont think I have as direct an analogy with Fomapan 400, its more of its own thing. Film strips (exposure latitude, base clarity) Rollei Fomapan 400, exposed for the wall/tent light. All photos were given the same amount of sharpening and then inverted after cleaning up any lingering dust with the spot healing tool. It seemed I was getting better results with my R72 filter. The datasheets say that at 2, you should go with a 6 exposure. Fomapan 200 suited me better. There is no longer that very obvious and annoying halation or muddiness in the prints. I absolutely understand that for someone looking for a lower grain and more of a modern look the Fomapan emulsion isnt going to work, but then, I am not really sure that the Kentmere 400 would meet this requirement either neither of these films wins in that department. If you need a budget film, Kentmere is your best choice. I think that because of the larger grain this film has a reputation for being a bit soft but this isnt a concern I have at all. I am interested in contrast in less than optimal conditions, and the detail were able to pull out of specifically the darker areas of the image. There are definitely shared characteristics in the results of these films, but I think its more like that Fomapan 400 is a cubic grained film. Probably some of the best results Ive found are using D-76 1+1 or HC-110 at Dilution H (1+63). I personally think the grain and contrast is much better. The high contrast results really lent a wonderful aesthetic to those images, and Im glad I didnt choose to take Kentmere. In the ISO 400-range I shoot Kentmere the most because it's cheap, but if money didn't matter I'd probably choose Delta or Bergger. Great article Simon! Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. If thats the look youre going for, it may satisfy you, but I personally prefer Ilford Delta 100 for 35mm photography, and in terms of classic style emulsions, I even find that I prefer Kentmere 100 in 35mm to Fomapan. There really isn't any more of a risk with the more expensive film. You can see the loss of highlight at the top of the frame, but there are more shades of grey that are maintained. At any rate, nice shots. For your last two pictures I can only guess. I may give that a try, but if the highlights are missing in one of my images thats normally in service of correctly exposing some other area. The contrast, larger grain, and character is the best Ive found at this price point. Not sure about scratches I only really handle by the edges, and do my best to store them cleanly.Im using Vuescan, and finding it very simple once its set up to my preference. Kentmere 400, metered for the mid-tone. Excuse the scanner artefacts looking directly at the negatives, there is perhaps a very small difference in the darker areas of the sky, but this is marginal, so marginal in fact that I am not really sure you can call a winner. Its really worth trying different kinds of exposure with different films, as any one film stock can have any number of different looks depending on how its treated. As a winter/autumn all rounder the Kentmere is serving me well, and Fomapan as a high-light film makes a lot of sense. Its actually the other way around Foma on the left! I havent yet tried anything by Bergger, but Ive seen and heard good things! The recurring points here pretty much nail it: HP5+ is a more consistently quality film that pushes much better. The developer shouldnt matter too much for this kind of process, any will do.The scanner I use is a Plustek 8100. But HP5 Plus offers something different than Tri-X - stronger contrast and what I think is less pronounced grain, especially in the skies. Tri-X at 320 is a wonderful look but one roll at 35mm is twice the price of Fomapan, sometimes even more than half! And I thought taping over the red dot was silly. Your link has been automatically embedded. Here are a few examples of shots Ive taken with Fomapan 400 Action, 200 Creative, and 100 Classic. I found you had to be more accurate with exposure (i.e. TLDR: Differences are minimal, both are cheap, Kentmere very very slightly better. You can post now and register later. for Accessibility for blind people who use screen readers Notice the bright spots on the womans bag, where the light bleeds through. The question isn't "is HP5 $20 better than Foma", but rather "do I value my work to the tune of $20". Personally though, as someone who accepts, even likes grain, and isnt averse to the look that youll get out of both of these films in Rodinol I am definitely thinking that the Fomapan offering will get a few more chances to impress. But honestly, Fomapan 400 Action is nearly indistinguishable from the two slower speeds in terms of grain, contrast, and image quality. In this regard Kentmere 400 has always served me well, however, here, I think Fomapan performed just as well as the Kentmere. Clear editor. Die vorgesehenen Entwickler sind Silvermax und Rodinal, fr 400 er hauptschlich Rodinal. Ill tweak things in time and see if anything can be made to work better for me, but for now these are my opinions on each emulsion! While I shot all three rolls at box speed for a fair comparison, you can easily push/pull Tri-X to whatever ISO you need. Can you talk about what developers you used? Pitch black shadows, and massive grain, similar to tri-x. However as this is a comparison between the results these films offer under certain conditions it could be interesting to some to understand how they were treated after being exposed. Compare Ilford HP5 Plus vs Arista EDU Ultra 400 vs Foma Fomapan 400 Action DD-X is already to go. And the best part is that you can get Fomapan 400 in medium format and sheet film. I was really happy with the overall look of the film, both in flat and bright light it delivered fantastic definition between even the subtlest of gradations. Id probably let it sit in the developer a little longer next time.Regardless of the negative density, the results speak for themself - just look at the detail in the chrome of the motorcycle pictured below. 5x7 Fomapan 200 at e.i. If youve enjoyed my photographs here I have a larger selection available onmy Instagram, from all different kinds of films and projects. Trees dont move. Fomapan features a more severe cut off, with well exposed images showing pure blacks and pure whites with only a very same-y grey in the middle. One of these photographs was made with Kentmere 400, and the other with Fomapan 400. Happy shooting! Foma 400 indeed has deep red sensitivity. Ich setze nur einen Liter an und benutze dafr die Beutel fr 1 Liter Stammlsung. Added additional sample images. Das braucht nicht viel Platz. Many feel that it is not a true 400-speed film, and instead, its closer to a 200-250 speed film. Kentmere 400 feels like Tri-X with less dynamic range. Thank you Marius! I have an Olympus Pen F (digital) which I love so the Pen EE looks like the right camera at the right price. It has lower dynamic range, and must be treated carefully regardless of what its being shot at. ehrlich gesagt habe ich keine Ahnung. Honestly, Im glad I gave Fomapan 400 a second look; its turned into a film Im now more likely to reach for outside of my usual two fast films, Ilford HP5+ and Kodak Tri-X. 1. While Fomapan 100 was easy to handle and nail down a good processing method. One word of caution when scanning Kentmere films with flatbed scanners like the Epson V600 or V800 - be very careful with the Unsharp Mask. But, as might have become evident at this point, my film choices are not exactly highly informed, I wasnt about to shoot test targets or anything ridiculous like that I just used both films as I usually would, then developed them according to the manufacturers instructions. I thankfully finally ran out of the 100ft. However, dependable old Tri-X 400 at 320 works for me, especially in 120 size. Also scanner brand and model name please. Yep, there are many reviews of Foma 400 on the net, and they often say that, shot at box speed and developed as recommended, its grainy, contrasty and lacks shadow detail, which is what pushed film looks like.I shoot a lot of it, all at 200. The images more often than not remind of me Tri-X at box speed that prevailing grey-tone is distinct. Glad you enjoyed this piece. Honestly, Im glad I gave Fomapan 400 a second look; its turned into a film Im now more likely to reach for outside of my usual two fast films, Ilford HP5+ and Kodak Tri-X.
